  • Safe operation of long pipelines at lower temperatures is conditional upon excellent fracture properties of the steels used for their production. One of the standard methods for evaluating the fracture behaviour of steels for piping system production is the drop weight tear test (DWTT). The resistance of steel against stable crack propagation is characterized by the percentage of the fracture surface represented by the shear area. The percentage value of the shear area depends on the applied international standard and on the subjective point of view of the evaluator. Therefore, an important step in the implementation of the DWTT is the objective and independent evaluation of the proportion of the fracture surface represented by the shear area. In this study, the height profile of the DWTT fracture surface is evaluated according to standards considering the visual character of the fracture. Additionally, the fractal dimension of the fracture surface is calculated by means of the box-counting algorithm. Testing of a set of specimens of X52 steel revealed the correlation between the percentage value of the shear area and the fractal dimension of the fracture surface.
