Description
  • Possibilities of processing of the brittle alloy type Fe-40Al-Zr-B (with 40.3 at.% Al) were evaluated by the laboratory hot rolling. The material obtained by melting in the laboratory vacuum induction furnace had the following chemical composition (wt.%): 24.6 Al – 0.15 Mn – 0.02 C – 0.18 Zr – 0.010 B (the remainder is Fe). The obtained castings of thickness 19.5 mm were processed by flat rolling with several reversible reductions to the nominal thickness of 12.5 mm or 5.5 mm. The samples were formed either directly or after wrapping in a special welded protective capsule made of the ferritic corrosion-resistant steel AISI 430. Rolling of the given material without the protective capsule led to immediate formation of transversal cracks. The use of protective capsules made it possible to achieve by hot rolling in laboratory conditions the partial height reductions of almost 20% and the total height reduction of more than 70%. From the viewpoint of technological formability, conformity of the deformation behaviour of the sample and the capsule, and the progress of the structure-forming processes, leading to refining of the initial primary (cast) structure, the forming temperature near 1200°C proved to be an optimum.
