  • Aggregation of methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), nile blue (NB) and rhodamine B (RB) in aqueous solution were studied and percentage distribution of their species (monomer, dimer, trimer and tetramer) in variously concentrated aqueous solutions was calculated. Ca2+-montmorillonite with high layer charge (SAz-1) and reduced charge (RC-SAz(210)) were saturated with the cationic dyes (CD). The prepared cationic dye/montmorillonite complexes were analysed using fluorescence and Vis electron spectroscopy. The Vis electron spectra of fully saturated CD/SAz complexes revealed the presence of higher aggregates, which cause quenching of fluorescence. A huge increase of fluorescence was observed in CD/RC-SAz(210) complexes where mainly monomers and/or dimers of cationic dye are formed. Suppression of dye aggregation in these complexes was due to reduction of montmorillonite layer charge and low dye loading.
