  • A special method of hot rolling of laboratory castings from the alloy Fe – 29.5 Al – 0.47 Si – 1.16 C (wt. %) was developed, preventing the origin of surface cracks in contact with the cold work rolls and enabling forming this material with extremely low plasticity. This method is based on the application of the welded protective capsules, and the repeated in-process heating of the unfinished rolled product. The structure of the initial castings with thickness 19.5 mm is characterised by a large heterogeneity. After the heating to 1250 °C, the multi-pass hot rolling to the plate of thickness 4.5 mm and the following retarded cooling of the rolled product to temperature 600 °C, the structure with grains sized ca 30 µm up to 1 mm, stretched in the direction of rolling, was achieved. The long-term annealing of the plate at temperature 1200 °C led progressively to crumbling of the greatest formations and, vice versa, coarsening of the finest grains.
