Description
  • Semiconductors such as metal sulphides and metal oxides are well known materials for photocatalysis. The reduction of CO2 using photocatalysts is one of the most promising methods because CO2 can be reduced to utilizable compounds (e.g., methanol, ethanol, methane, hydrogen) by irradiating with UV light at room temperatures and low pressure. The ZnS nanoparticles were deposited on montmorillonite (MMT) in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium (CTA). UV spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy proved the formation of nanoparticles with the diameter ranging from 3 nm to 5 nm. Photoluminiscence spectra exhibited a strong emission band between 300 nm and 600 nm, which was assigned to transitions due to sulphur vacancies in ZnS. The prepared ZnS-montmorillonite (ZnS-MMT) nanocomposite was used for the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 providing considerably high efficiency which exceeded the results of commercial TiO2 Degussa P25 5-6 times.
