  • In the past in almost every European country tar has been used in road construction. A considerable amount of tar-containing binders can be still present in the recycled asphalts. The detection and determination of coal tar in asphalt pavement material has gained increasing importance in the field analysis. This presentation describes the qualitative and semiquantitative determination of tar by use of phenol and PAHs as markers, because their content in tar is 10 000 times higher than in bitumen.The solvent extraction and thin-layer chromatographic separation of phenols on silica gel sheets with chemical detection have been investigated in different eluent systems. Following the selective isolation, solutions were screened for PAH contamination by use of UV-spectrophotometry. The linear calibration curves allowed the assessment of PAH contamination with greater accuracy and enables the estimation of PAH over a broad concentration range. Preliminary results of our tests show very good agreement
