Description
  • Under mechanical loading, at room temperature, the stainless steel AISI 321 is unstable and undergoes a partial phase transformation austenite --> martensite. This phase transformation can be accompanied by the TRIP effect (Transformation Induced Plasti city) characterised by a strong increase of the plastic and mechanical properties of steel. The structural instability can limit the use of this steel in the chemical and energy industry. That's why this paper deals with structural heterogeneity induced by mechanical loading. X-ray analysis, as well as measurement of microhardness were performed on samples submitted to various types of mechanical loading, i.e. tensile and compression tests, and friction tests done on a tribometr of ball-disk type.
