Description
| - The distribution of individual metals in the studied dump-fields is irregular. It depends on the mineralogical composition of ores, on the original concentration of the mentioned metals in the technogenic sediments of the spoil dumps, and also on their migration abilities and sorption properties. The different migration properties of individual metals and the resulting specific mutual correlation relationships in the localities of Podlipa and Reiner can also be explained by their different rock surrounding and consequently by different intensities of sorption on natural sorbents (clay minerals, limonite, etc.), which are formed by weathering of primary rocks. Concentrations of Cu, As, Sb, Fe, Cd, Co, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in surface water and in groundwater were compared to the values presented in the respective legislation and no substantial contamination of these waters was observed. The ability of drainage water to precipitate cementation copper on the surface of iron objects has been confirmed. This property of copper can be utilised in the construction of geochemical iron barriers to help the remediation of a mining-affected landscape contamined by heavy metals. The concentrations of heavy metals decrease in plant tissues in the following order: Fe. Zn. Pb and Cu. Plant tissues are considerably damaged at the dump-field and increments of year shoots are extremely narrow. Anomalous cell-wall coarsening. occurrence of calluses. resin canals and numerous hyphae in vessels suggest defense mechanism of plants which are exposed to the stress factors at the dump-field such as contamination by heavy metals. soil and moisture deficiency. movement of incohesive material down to slope.
