  • Ťažisko práce je komplexný mineralogický a geochemický výskum odkaliskových sedimentov z odkaliska uhoľných popolov pri obci Poša. Drenážnej vody kontaminujú povrchové vody a sedimenty potoka Kyjov a rieky Ondava potenciálne toxickými prvkami, a to predovšetkým As a Zn. Procesy zvetrávania a rozpustenie odkaliskových sedimentov majú významný vplyv na mobilitu a bioprístupnosť arzénu a zinku. Uvoľnenie As a Zn z odkaliska výrazne závisí na mnohých faktoroch: topenia snehu, vyšší úhrn zrážok, mineralogické zloženie popola, chemizmus vody, atď Kombinované výsledky sekvenčnej extrakcie, rovnako ako chemickej a mineralogickej analýzy naznačili, že mobilizačný potenciál As je pravdepodobne riadený prítomnosťou Fe/Mn oxyhydroxidov v materiáli odkaliska.
  • The focus of study is complex mineralogical and geochemical investigation of coal ash impoundment near the village Poša. The drainage water contaminating surface waters and sediments of the Kyjov Brook and Ondava River by potential toxic elements, mainly As and Zn. The processes of weathering and dissolution of the impoundment sediments have a significant impact on mobility and bioavailability of arsenic and zinc. The release of As and Zn from the impoundment material significantly depends on a lot of factors: snow melting, higher precipitation events, mineralogical composition ofashes, water chemistry, etc. Combined results of the sequential extraction tests as well as chemical and mineralogical analysis indicated that As mobilization potential from the sediments is likely controlled by Fe/Mn oxyhydroxide mineral phases. The presence of Fe and Mn oxyhydroxides and incidentally the amount of sulphides plays an important role in terms of mobility and bioavailability of arsenic and zinc. To determine bioaccumulation plant capability and an estimate of bioavailable portion of As and Zn, the accumulation coefficients and indices were calculated. High concentrations of arsenic have been reported in plants Typha latifolia and Phragmites australis. (en)
