  • Cleaning waste and mine waters of deleterious metals is critical to meet environmental emission standards and also to allow efficient metallurgical processing. Adsorption technology has been shown to be a cheap, efficient and readily applicable technique for cleaning such waters, provided that a cheap adsorbent is readily available. The Kalgoorlie-Goldfields region of Western Australia, which is at the heart of Australia?s mining industry, is abundant in clay-rich top soils and also has large tailings heaps of activated mine tailings, both of which seem suitable as sorbents. The mining operations in the Kalgoorlie-Goldfields also require cleaning of mine and waste waters. This work investigated the sorption properties of top soils and mine tailings and found that NaCl washed samples had Pb2+ sorption capacities up to 105 mg Pb2+/g of adsorbent, and chemically activated samples allowed sorption capacity of up to 124 mg Pb2+/g of adsorbent.
