Description
| - This chapter summarizes current trends in genomics of wheat. Detailed genetic maps have been generated for wheat (using RFLP, SSR, SNP and DArT methods). All maps are available on GrainGenes. Common sets of markers can be used to establish the relationship between the wheat genome and those of other species within the Poaceae family. Analysis at the DNA sequence level of regions that are orthologous at the map level has shown that marker orders are highly conserved between species. Map-based gene isolation in wheat has become a reality and map-based cloning strategies in wheat are developing. A global physical map of the polyploid wheat genome is in progress. Current projections for the number of genes present in the hexaploid wheat genome vary from 108,000 to 300,000. Genes are organized in gene islands. The next big target is to obtain the sequence of the wheat genome. Knowledge of all genes and their function will allow highly efficient and targeted improvement of wheat.
