Description
  • The experiments carried out with the PALS iodine laser have shown that well-formed plasma jets can be produced at laser interaction with targets made of materials with high atomic numbers (e.g. Cu), while it is impossible to launch a plasma jet on targets made of light materials like plastic. This difference is discussed by considering the radiative cooling of expanding plsmas, the influence of target irradiation intensity profile, and different expansion regimes of the Cu and plastic plasmas. The results of experiments and theoretical analyses show that the relative role of those three factors depends on the target irradiation geometry as well as on the target material used.
