  • ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a general-purpose, heavy-ion detector at the CERN LHC which focuses on QCD, the strong-interaction sector of the Standard Model. It is designed to address the physics of strongly interacting matter and the quark-gluon plasma at extreme values of energy density and temperature in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Besides running with Pb ions, the physics program includes collisions with lighter ions, lower energy running and dedicated proton-nucleus runs. ALICE will also take data with proton beams at the top LHC energy to collect reference data for the heavy-ion program and to address several QCD topics for which ALICE is complementary to the other LHC detectors. The ALICE detector has been built by a collaboration including currently over 1000 physicists and engineers from 105 Institutes in 30 countries. Its overall dimensions are 16_16_26 m3 with a total weight of approximately 10 000 t.

  • ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) je detektor na CERN LHC určený pro měření srážek těžkých iontů, který se zaměřuje na QCD, tzn. sektor silných interakcí ve Standardním Modelu. Design detektoru odpovídá záměru studovat fyziku silně interagující hmoty a kvark-gluonového plazmatu při extrémních hodnotách hustoty energie a teploty v jádro-jaderných srážkách. Fyzikální program zahrnuje, kromě studia srážek iontů Pb, také srážky lehčích iontů, srážky při nižších energiích a dedikované srážky proton-jádro. ALICE bude také nabírat data s protonovými svazky při nejvyšších energiích na LHC pro zaznamenání referenčních dat pro těžko-iontový program a pro studium některých témat v QCD, v nichž je ALICE komplementární k ostatním detektorům na LHC. Detektor ALICE byl zkonstruován ve spolupráci přes 1000 fyziků a techniků ze 105 institutů ve 30 státech. Rozměry detektoru jsou 16x16x26 m3 a celková váha je asi 10 tisíc tun. (cs)
