Description
| - Photosystem II (PSII) is the enzyme found in plants, algae and cyanobacteria that catalyzes the solar-driven production of oxygen from water during oxygenic photosynthesis. One consequence of the unique chemistry catalyzed by PSII appears to be its enhanced vulnerability to irreversible light-induced damage. To counteract this damage, oxygenic photosynthetic organisms have developed a repair process, termed the 'PSII repair cycle', which involves a series of steps that results in the selective replacement of the damaged protein subunit and subsequent full restoration of photochemical activity and water oxidation. Some aspects of PSII repair, such as assembly of the Mn4Ca cluster performing water oxidation, might be relevant to the assembly of artificial water-splitting catalysts
