Description
  • Over the last few decades, material and technological analyses have become an indispensable part of an art historical examination of pre-modern artworks, as it is documented by scholarly catalogues of exhibitions or museum collections. In the process of conservation/restoration, art historical examination is an essential part linking analysis and conservation (or copy production). In spite of that, material analyses can never really become a “firm support” for art history, a support which this field of study still longs to locate externally. Just as any “scientific fact”, the results of material analyses obtained in the context of natural science have to be interpreted in the context of humanities, which may result in divergent opinions. It is possible to diversely interpret dendrochronological data (Madonna from Klosterneuburg), individual styles of underdrawings (circle of the Master of the Rajhrad altarpiece), punchwork (Madonna from Wroclaw) or chemical analysis of pigments and paint layers (Man of Sorrows with corbel from the Old Town City Hall). On the other hand, a correct evaluation of technological state of an artwork can lead to a false art historical assessment of the original (Altarpiece from Matejovce).
