Description
  • The aim of this work is to study the possibility of active control of substance's diffusion across the silica shell of prepared microspheres. The composite microspheres are in the size range of tens of micrometers and were prepared via the soft templating route. The microparticles have a porous silica (SiO2 ) shell and a hollow core which includes nanoparticles of iron oxides (Fe2 O3 / Fe3 O4 ). We tested two approaches for controlling the diffusion across the silica shell: i) so-called polymer brushes systems and ii) covering the surface of spheres by a phase change material (Fig. 1). We chose thermoresponsive polymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) as polymer brushes and palm oil as the phase-change material. Both of them were bound on the surface and inside the pores of prepared hollow microspheres and the release kinetics were studied.
