Description
  • We study effects of convective transport on chemical signal propagation in a simple (single layer) epithelium by means of mathematical modeling. Oscillatory flow regimes were considered. In our model, we assume that the movement of an extracellular medium is affected by harmonically oscillating convective flow. The oscillatory flow can be induced by heart action or walking. We have carried out numerical simulations using Comsol Multiphysics 3.5. Our results suggest that the signal propagation velocity increases with increasing amplitude, if the convective velocity harmonically oscillates around the zero value. The dimensionless propagation velocity also depends on the period. At lower period regimes, the velocity is almost the same as in the case with stagnant extracellular medium (with zero convective velocity). With longer periods, the velocity becomes significantly higher. These results were confirmed by independent simulations based on the finite difference method.
