Description
  • The early liposome-based medicaments employed the idea of slow release and hence the medicinal effect is prolonged. However, the liposomes have more potential. Depending on its composition, the phospholipid bilayer undergoes a phase transition that makes the membrane much more permeable. The membrane is solid-like and little permeable at lower temperatures. At a phase transition temperature, the bilayer melts to liquid-like structure characterized by more mobile phospholipid molecules, which causes the membrane to be more permeable and less rigid. The phase change temperature is characteristic to the phospholipid bilayer; it depends on a length and a saturation of fatty acids chains and it is different for a particular polar head type. An existence of the phase change makes the release from liposomes controllable by temperature.
