  • The undesired phenomenon of shrinkage cracking of compressible filter cakes during deliquoring by means of differential gas pressure is of great practical importance for the pharmaceutical industry. Once a cake cracks, a channel is formed and gas permeability increases significantly as the gas passes preferentially through the crack rather than the pores in the filter cake. This leads to a poor quality of deliquored cake. In this contribution we present the results of an experimental parametric study on cake cracking. The effects of the following parameters were studied at laboratory scale using a Nutsche filter: particle size distribution (PSD), filtration and deliquoring pressure, filter cake depth, pore size of filter medium and concentration of slurry. Our results from experiments with pressure and cake depth agree with published literature, and further experiments with filter medium and concentration show that the possibility exists to influence and possibly prevent filter cake cracking.
