Description
  • In the study described in this paper we have prepared microbeads composed of thermo-responsive polymer PNIPAM and iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. These composite microbeads keep the temperature-sensitive swelling/deswelling properties of pure PNIPAM. Moreover, magnetic nanoparticles in the PNIPAM/Fe3O4 microbeads enable self-heating in the presence of alternating magnetic field (AMF) [8]. When Fe3O4 nanoparticles are exposed to AMF, heat can be generated by Néel relaxation, Brownian relaxation and hysteresis loses, hence Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be used as heating agents directly integrated into the PNIPAM microcapsules. The generated heat causes the polymer to de-swell, thereby releasing its content. Depending on the application, the released payload can be low- or high-molecular weight substance, nanoparticles or other small-scale objects.
