Description
| - Classical gasoline engines in automobiles are operated at stoichiometric air/fuel ratio. Under such conditions, it is possible to decrease harmful exhaust gas components in three-way catalytic converter (TWC), where the oxidation of CO and unburned HC and the reduction of NOx take place simultaneously. On the contrary, economical diesel and advanced gasoline (lean-burn) engines are operated with excess of air in fuel mixture, with results in high O2 concentrations in exhaust gas and complicated NOx abatement. Much attention has been focused in recent years on NOx storage reduction (NSR) catalysts, because these systems represent a commercially viable solution for the control of NOx emissions from lean-burn gasoline and diesel engines. During lean conditions NOx is stored on the NSR catalyst surface in the form of nitrites and nitrates, while during rich conditions it gets released and reduced. NSR catalysts usually contain an alkaline earth oxide (e.g. BaO) as the NOx storage component, while the cata
