  • Klasické benzínové spalovací motory pracují se stechiometrickou směsí paliva a vzduchu. Za takovýchto podmínek je možné snižovat obsah škodlivých látech ve výfukových plynech pomocí třícestného katalyzátoru (TWC), kde součesně probíhají oxidace CO a nespálených uhlovodíků a redukce NOx. Úspornější dieslové a některé benzínové motory spalují směs s přebytkem vzduchu, což má za následek vysokou koncentraci O2 ve výfukovém plynu, a tím obtížnou redukci NOx. Jednu z technologií, schopnou eliminovat NOx ve výfukových plynech motorů spalujících chudou směs, je katalyzátor s ukládáním NOx (NSRC). Princip jeho činnosti je následující: během spalování chudé směsi (řádově minuty) jsou NOx adsorbovány na povrch katalyzátoru ve formě dusitanů a dusičnanů, po nasycení povrchu katalyzátoru dojde ke krátkodobému spalování bohaté směsi (řádově sekundy), čímž dojde k vyredukování povrchu katalyzátoru a ten je připraven pro následující chudou fázi.
