Description
  • The general class of techniques for imaging and measuring surfaces by a small probe on a fine scale, down to the level of molecules and groups of atoms is called Scanning probe microscopy (SPM). However the general public often refers to this class of techniques as Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). AFM is a relatively new technique of characterization of the topology and other properties of materials which was historically developed as an extension of the scanning tunneling microscopy (Nobel price for Rohrer and Binning in 1986). AFM allows to characterize the distribution of local magnetic, electrostatic, elastic, visco-elastic, adhesive and chemical or bio-chemical affinity properties in various samples. Thus it is becoming an essential tool for the systematic investigation of material properties and physico-chemical processes on the nano- and meso-scale.

(cs)
