  • Electrokinetically driven polystyrene microchips for transportation of aqueous electrolytes were recently developed in our lab. However, these chips suffer from some disadvantages, e.g., irreproducible dimensions of the transport channels, unknown value of the effectively applied voltage, and difficult implementation of the source electrodes. In this work, we have developed an improved single-capillary microfluidic chip with a well-defined geometry. The applied voltage imposed on the microchannel is measured by a pair of auxiliary electrodes. A gigaohmic resistor is inserted between these electrodes in order to measure the applied voltage. The characteristics of the electrokinetic flow, i.e., zeta-potential, electroosmotic mobility and velocity of the electrokinetic flow are evaluated by the conductivity method.
