Description
  • In this paper we summarize results of experimental studies on applications of electric fields to various biotransformations (using soluble or immobilised enzymes or whole microbial, animal or plant cells) published till 2005. The micro-scale applications are not included. The benefits of the application of electric fields to biotransformations are shown. Finally we present results of our experimental studies on enzyme reactors where the enzyme is entrapped within a polymeric hydrogel matrix and the external electric field is applied in order to modify biotransformation rate due to variations to transport rates of reaction components and H+ and OH- ions. Considerable effects of an intensity of electric field on reaction rate and substrate conversion are illustrated using penicillin G splitting by penicillin acylase as a model reaction.
