Description
| - Results of an experimental study of the growth rate of the amoeboid organism (the slime mold) Physarum polycephalum cultivated on the agar plates are presented. The specific growth rate expressed as the rate of increase of the area occupied by the growing plasmodium is used for growth quantification. The specific growth rate is typically about 2.1 h-1. Remarkable deceleration of the plasmodium spreading towards the cathode was observed when the electric field was applied to the plasmodium. The plasma streaming within the plasmodial veins, i.e. periodic switching of the direction of the plasma motion, is typical phenomenon observed in the growing Physarum polycephalum. Strong influence of the electric fields applied to the plasmodium on the streaming period was observed. The electric field may also give rise to the anisotropy of the plasma streaming when remarkably different periods are observed for the forward and backward motions.
