Description
| - The periodically operated NOx storage and reduction (NSR) catalytic converters are becoming promising and commercially employed solution to the emissions of nitrogen oxides from economical lean burn gasoline engines. Multiphase mathematical model of the catalytic monolithic reactor has been developed to study the effects of internal transport in the porous catalyst. It includes mass transport from the bulk gas to the pores of the washcoat and diffusion and reactions in the porous structures. The non-stationary operation of the NSR converter is simulated and transport limitations are discussed for both phases of operation, i.e. in the course of lean period, when NOx are stored on the surface under the excess of oxygen, and in the short rich phase, when the stored NOx are reduced by the components resulting from the rich fuel injection (e.g. CO). The influence of washcoat thickness on the NOx conversion is investigated.
