Description
  • A suspension with sufficiently large particles of carbonation precipitate can significantly reduce the consumption of lime in sugar factories, thereby producing various positive ecological effects (including reductions in both the mining of limestone and the production of carbonation lime), as well as economic benefits. Our research was focused on testing the size distribution of precipitate in various suspensions in juice purification. We chose an image analysis method, combined with microscopic observation, for the determination of particle parameters. After calibration the area of each scanned particle was measured, and its equivalent diameter calculated. From this data, particle size distribution was computed, from which we were able to evaluate precipitate damage. We recommend the use of this method to prevent particle damage, and thereby reduce lime addition in sugar technology.
