Description
  • The study has been focused on the biological removal of nitrate from industrial wastewaters coming from a technology of nitro-organic compounds production. The wastewater contained very high concentration of nitrates (1.5 to 2 g/l) accompanied by sulphates from 3 to 6 g/l, pH 1, temperature 15 °C and no organic matter. Batch experiments with non adapted activated sludge at different substrate type and dose were carried out to examine kinetics of biological removal of nitrates and sulphates. Results indicated a successive removal of nitrates and sulphates and a possibility to restrict the process only to denitrification by a limited addition of substrate. The continuous laboratory model including the neutralization tank, substrate dosing, reactors for denitrification and degasification, sedimentation tank, and sludge recirculation was operated entirely for nitrates removal. Wastewater was neutralized only to pH 2.5 calculated with alkalinity restored during denitrification. Efficiency of nitrogen removal and a specific denitrification rate were 98 % and 15.6 mg/g.h (N-NO3 -, VSS) respectively. The successful results of the long-term operation of the model have led to the proposal of optimal operational conditions and technological parameters of biological denitrification of wastewater with high concentration of nitrates.
