Description
  • Thermal desorption presents very effective remediation technology for solid matrix contaminated by difficult degradable contaminants with high boiling point, however its basic drawback lies in high operating costs induced by huge energy consumption of process. In this work the basic mechanisms of contaminants desorption from prevailing solid materials (for example soil and building waste) was proved. Both kinds of samples were examined - spiked and real samples containing some pesticides (for example HCH, HCB, DDT), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Obtained results showed, that the major mechanism for more polar contaminants (chlorinated pesticides) is co - transport with water vapor. Consequently these contaminants are removed from solid matrix under lower temperature than their boiling point, bringing significant energy saving. In addition to water vapor incidence, contaminants removal is supported by other carrier media, for example nitrogen. Microwave heating brings fundamental alternative for discussed technology, because faster heating of material during thermal desorption process is evoked. Soil and building waste contain species, which are good absorbents of microwaves, for example metal oxides and carbonates. Studied groups of contaminants (pesticides, PCB, PAH) were removed from solid waste with high efficiency in laboratory-scale experiments by temperature about 250°C (decomposition of natural organic compounds still does not proceed). Lower value of efficiency of contaminants removal was reached by the same temperature in pilot - scale experiments under the influence of more non - homogeneity of system.
