  • Non-target oxidant demand has been studied in this work to interpret the mechanisms of reactions between potassium permanganate and humic substances (representing subsurface natural organic matter) in the aqueous solution exhibiting neutral pH value. A laboratory-scale batch reactor equipped with continuous detection of gaseous product and periodical measurement of solubilized species was constructed, in which humic substances oxidation was studied. The experiments illustrated in this work showed that 1) only a smaller part of humic substances contacted with permanganate was oxidized up to carbon dioxide (measured as a sum of gaseous and bicarbonate form), while the remaining oxidized products were detected in the form of nonvolatile organic substances, 2) highly toxic karbon monoxide was identified among the reactor off-gases.
