Description
  • The deep hydrodesulphurization of motor fuels could be accompanied by a significant catalyst deactivation. The deactivation could be caused by reaction conditions or properties of a feedstock.The feedstock can contain raw materials from secondary processes with the presence of coke precursors. For an industrial application the catalyst activity and deactivation should be verified using the specific conditions and feedstock. The verification can be realized by testing in pilot scale reactors. The industrial desulfurization is carried out in trickle bed reactors and the catalyst life is in the range 1-2 years. The long-time catalytic tests are very expensive and time consum-ing. The goal of this study was to evaluate the reliability of experimental HDS catalyst activity testing carried out in a pilot scale trickle-bed reactor. Time dependent kinetic description of catalyst activity decreasing in combination with steady state flow velocity was used for comparison with the experimental results. The catalyst deactivation was evaluated by mathematical models of the process and SEM monitoring of the changes in catalyst structure. The catalyst activity tests were carried out in the high pressure trickle-bed reactor of 30 mm I.D. and 887 mm lenght. The reactor bed consisted of three section of different porosity, from the top to the bottom: a) calming pre-section of 2 mm grain inert SiC, b) followed by two sections of industrial alumina catalyst in form of 1.3 mm trilobe ex-trudes diluted 1 : 2 and 1 : 1, respectively by 0.1 mm SiC fines. Middle distillates - atmospheric gas oil (AGO) and light cycle oil (LCO) were chosen as feedstock components for the HDS activity tests. Analyses of products were carried out according to the standard ASTM methods.The new and spent catalyst particles were scanned by SEM technique.
