Description
| - Kovohute Pribram has developed a technol. of portable zinc carbon and alk. batteries treatment which consists of batteries crushing, sorting components and their utilization and in co-operation with the Department of Metals and Corrosion Engineering, VSCHT Praha, a hydrometallurgical method to utilize spent electrode material, so called active mass, which is the key factor to fill new goals for recycling efficiency set by Directive 2006/66/EU. This paper describes the developed method of spent Zn/MnO2 batteries treatment. After the dismantling of the batteries the active mass was analyzed and found to contain 28 % Zn and 22 % Mn. Batch lab. expts. were carried out to establish an acid leaching procedure aiming at achieving max. zinc extn. under simultaneous possible depressing manganese extn. Leaching of active mass was performed in sulfuric acid originating from spent lead acid batteries. Leach liquors obtained were purified by alkalization and cementation. Zinc was recovered from refined liquors as zinc carbonate ppt. usable for zinc prodn. or other purposes.
