Description
| - It is a known fact that ancient glasses produced in the Middle East and containing sodium (Na) salts as a flux are more stable and more chemically durable against environmental effects than glasses containing potassium (K) (which are known as woodash glasses) produced much later in Europe and Bohemia. The objective of this work was to study the behavior of model glasses containing sodium or potassium in presence of water and air humidity. The model glasses were prepared using the following molar ratios: 75 mole % SiO2 - 15 mole % Na2O (K2O) and 10 mole % CaO: glasses A and B and glasses C and D with the weight ratios: 70 wt. % SiO2 - 20 wt. % Na2O (K2O) a 10 wt. % CaO. Crushed glass (0.3 - 0.5 mm) was exposed to distilled water at the ambient temperature, 37 oC and 60oC for a period of 2 weeks and compact glass samples were exposed to drinking water and air humidity for 8 months (at 37oC). It was found out that the nature of the employed flux (sodium or potassium) has a fundamental influence on the kinetics but it does not have any influence on symptoms of glass corrosion. The sodium glass dissolved incongruently and the potassium glass dissolved congruently. The corrosion of glass is closely related to the ratio R2O/ (SiO2) and, surprisingly, even small changes in that ratio significantly change the kinetics of glass corrosion.
