Description
  • The examples described in this chapter demonstrate the amazing progress made during the last two decades in the joint supramolecular chemistry of calixarenes and fullerenes. On the other hand, despite some remarkable and obvious successes, the authors are confident that we are still only at the beginning of a long road, the end of which cannot be simply foreseen. Starting from simple complexation studies scientists are heading toward the design of more sophisticated fullerene-calixarene assemblies with useful functions on a macroscopic level. By learning more and more about the mutual interactions of both systems, their shape and interaction complementarity, it should be possible to design novel supramolecular systems with precisely defined threedimensional architecture, giving birth to novel materials with tailor-made properties and many practical applications. Hence, we dare say that continuing progress in the chemistry of these compounds will bring many fascinating discoveries in the near future.
