Description
| - Among the pore-forming agents (PFAs) commonly used in ceramic technology today, starch has a prominent position. In addition to its basic function as a PFA, which burns out during the heating phase of the firing schedule, starch is used as a combined PFA and body-forming agent (consolidation agent) in the so-called starch consolidation casting (SCC) process, due to its ability to swell in hot water. In contrast to pure starch systems which, have been quite extensively investigated and are frequently used (particularly rice, corn and potato starch), the cheaper raw materials wheat flour and semolina have only recently been considered for applications in ceramic technology. In this contribution we present new results achieved with smooth flour and semolina (and, for reasons of comparison, native wheat starch) used as PFA for the preparation of porous alumina ceramics. Sample preparation by SCC consists in slurry preparation (mixing), homogenization, casting into metal molds, consolidation by swelling at
