  • Iontově selektivní membrány se řadí mezi moderní separační materiály, které nalezly v posledních desetiletích široké uplatnění, a to hlavně jako elektrochemické senzory či aktivní separátory v elektrochemických procesech. Výhodou použití iontově výměnných membrán je, že nahrazují klasický kapalný elektrolyt v palivovém článku.V důsledku toho dochází ke snížení rizika koroze materiálu článku, je možné kompaktnější uspořádání článku a jednodušší manipulace. Poslední dobou tedy vzrůstá zájem o využití nízkoteplotních palivových článků typu PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane). Často řešeným problémem na tomto poli však zůstává otázka použitelnosti dostupných membrán s ne zcela vyhovujícími vlastnostmi. V současné době je nejpoužívanější v tomto typu aplikace membrána typu Nafion od firmy DuPont. Kromě excelentních vlastností mají membrány typu Nafion i několik nedostatků, jako je vysoká cena, vyšší permeabilita pro paliva a citlivost na obsah vody.
