Description
  • The nitrate is carefully monitored compound because of its ambient affect to human health. The most frequent occurrence of this ion is in surface and groundwater. One of the possible methods how to remove the nitrate from treated water and convert it to compounds not dangerous for human health is the ion-exchange connected with the electrochemical reduction. Presented work is focused on the electrochemical reduction of the solution with high concentration of HCO3- and NO3- ion that comes up after regeneration of saturated strongly alkaline anion exchanger. In that solution the highest electrocatalytic activity was achieved so far using copper as a cathode material. At its surface the nitrate is reduced via nitrite to ammonium. This product is not desired at the moment, so other materials are explored. Binary materials are in the centre of interest in recent time, while the phenomenon of bifunctional electrocatalysis may lead to desired properties such as enhanced electrocatalytic activity for nitrate
