Description
  • Our improved synthetic approach is based on the reaction of appropriate pyrylium perchlorates with N,N-dialkyltrimethylsilylamines. The reaction is quite simple to handle, good yields of pentamethinium salts are obtained. A series of pentamethinium dyes was synthesized in this manner. Dependence of the UV-VIS absorption maximum of pentamethines on the substitution was studied. Bromination and chlorination of selected pentamethines was carried out yielding halogenated derivatives with significant bathochromic shifts of absorption maxima. In comparison with other pentamethinium salts 1,5-bis(dimethylamino)-1,3,5-triphenylpentamethinium-perchlorate and its analogues very easily undergo cyclization reaction with ammonia, perhaps due to an increased sterichindrance resulting into a %22bent%22 conformation. Hardly accessible pyridine derivatives were prepared in this fashion.
