Description
  • Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (Solanaceae), generally known as an Ashwagandha, is a perennial herb whose roots have been used in many traditional medicinal systems for treatment of various health disorders such as rheumatism and dyspepsia. Among other Withania species used in popular medicine, W. coagulans Dunal finds a prominent place in Ayurvedic, Unani and ancient Indian medicinal system. However, in comparison with W. somnifera, only a few present papers report biological activity of other species of the genus. Thus we decided to determine in vitro antimicrobial activity of three Withania species against potentially pathogenic bacteria and yeast. In this study, the antibacterial activity of crude methanol extracts from aerial parts of W. somnifera, W. coagulans and W. frutescens was tested against ten bacteria (Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis, Bacteroides fragilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. py
