Description
  • In 2006, probably the worldwide oldest grassland fertilizer experiment was identified in the Giant Mts. (Krkonoše/Karkonosze). Following treatments were applied at least 200 years: a) fertilization by manure and wood ash and b) never fertilized control. Fertilization and cutting management was terminated in 1944. Sharply contrasting vegetation in both treatments was first described in 1786. In July 2006, more than 60 years after the last fertilization, still visible differences in sward structure were revealed. Deschampsia cespitosa and Avenella flexuosa were dominants in fertilized treatment, whereas Nardus stricta was the dominant in the control. The soils analysis revealed abnormally high concentration of Ca in fertilized treatment in comparison with control treatment, probably due to the wood ash fertilization. Concentration of Mg and P in plant biomass was significantly higher in fertilized treatment. In sub-alpine conditions well visible residual after effect of fertilization on sward st
