  • This paper presents first results of the study dealing with spatial variability of humus forms morphological and chemical properties and factors controlling its variability, in mountain spruce old-growth forest in the Šumava national park. The survey of humus forms confirmed large spatial variability of the individual ectorganic horizons. Changes of the thickness and morphological properties in short distances are typical and respond to the ecological site conditions. The first results of relation between chemical properties of ectorganic horizons – vegetation – site conditions showed, that local variability in humus forms could possibly influence their state more than shift of site conditions over large distances. Similarly plant species occurring on soil surface are probably somehow related to state (morphological and chemical properties) of ectorganic horizons.
