Description	In the past a large part of the Krušné Hory Mts. was affected by immissions. After the forest ecosystems had disintegrated, suitable conditions developed for the presence of black grouse the numbers of which considerably increased in the course of the 1980s. Although there is a decreasing trend at present the numbers of black grouse maintain on a relatively high level. The numbers of black grouse in the Czech Republic in 2000 was estimated at 800 to 1000 cocks. Of these, more than one third occurs in the Krušné Mts. (Šťastný et al., in press). Since 1994 a complex research of the ecological requirements of black grouse is under way in the eastern part of the Krušné Hory Mts. In 1998 our attention was concentrated on the Grünwald model area. The main aims of our research included. Monitoring the distribution and numbers of black grouse in the study area.
