Description
  • The aim of this chapter is to review empirical studies testing the hypothesis that habitat fragmentation alters the pattern of predator prey interactions. We will discuss potential mechanisms that contribute to the altered pattern of predation in fragmented landscape. In particular, we will review mechanism underlining the robustly supported fact that abundances of various predator species are increased in fragmented landscape and that fragmentation affect prey populations via increased predation pressure along habitat edges (i.e. “edge effect hypothesis”). We will further discuss methodological approaches associated with field tests of these mechanisms. We will also try to resolve if the pattern of predation induced by habitat fragmentation is consistent across large geographical scales. Finally, we will point out main aspects of this problematic that are not sufficiently supported by empirical data and highlight possible directions of further research in this field.
