Description	The strategy proposed in this paper is the outcome of a systematic effort to resolve problems linked to disturbances in the ecological and aesthetic functions of the landscape in the Kladno region due to long-term coal mining. These problems have become even more important since the discontinuation of these anthropogenic activities. With the closure of coal mining in the region, a number of questions have arisen which now require an intensive search for answers. The range of disturbances to the ecological and aesthetic functions of the landscape, and their current impact, need to be identified. Then gradual mitigation by natural ecological succession or by rehabilitation measures needs to be implemented. The proposed categorisation was developed from data collected in an analysis of landscape vulnerability. The classification has been verified in several pilot studies and projects, and strategies are presented here.
