Description
| - Thirty-three isolates of Streptomyces from lesions on potato tubers and nine Streptomyces type strains were identified by fatty acid analysis and PCR and their pathogenicity was tested. The results were analysed using the unweighted pair group method algorithm. Pathogenicity and the genetic constitution of the pathogenicity island (PAI) were found to be correlated, and the results of fatty acid analysis and PCR correlated strongly for 34 % of the isolates. Altogether, 82 % of the isolates closely resembled the Streptomyces scabies type strain DSMZ 41658T included in this study. Isolates from regions with different meteorological and soil conditions and with different levels of pathogenicity formed clusters when grouped on the basis of fatty acid composition and DNA polymorphism. The most virulent isolates, namely Bee, Judita, and Madeleine, were identified as Streptomyces scabies. However, results of FAME, RAPD analysis, and pathogenicity tests differed significantly in 18 % of the isolates, and this
