Description
  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of weed competition on yield forming traits of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in the seeding year. The sampling was repeatedly realized in two cuts in regular grid with 120 sampling points. The number of plants, total number of stems, maximal length of stems, number of stems per plant, weight and number of shoots of weed species, and alfalfa dry matter yield was assessed for each sample. Weed infestation explained around 35 % of variability of alfalfa yield and its yield forming traits by clear-seeding stands. The weight and yield ratio of weeds significantly reduced alfalfa yield. The main detrimental effect of weed species was a reduction of alfalfa plants and stems number per m2. In addition weed species had a significant impact on yield and yield forming parameters. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated the significant differences in harmfulness of various weed species in the second cut. It could be probably connected with competition ability or pos
