Description
  • In 2004–2006, a phytocoenological survey was carried out in different production areas in either long-term organic or conventional farming systems in the Czech Republic. Weed species richness was evaluated and Shannon-Wiener diversity (H´) and evenness (E) indexes were calculated in winter cereals and root crops. Higher weed species richness was documented in agrophytocoenosis managed organically. Statistically significant differences were found between individual organic farms. Mean weed species richness on the area 1 m2 in winter cereals reached from 6.30 to 7.90 in conventional farming, from 14.23 to 18.83 in organic farming, and in root crops from 2.00 to 2.98 in conventional and from 8.18 to 15.20 in organic farming. Shannon-Wiener diversity indexes confirmed that on organic fields weed communities have higher diversity than on the conventional ones (H´ in conventional fields ranged from 0.27 to 1.34 and in organic farming fields from 1.26 to 2.23).
