Description
  • Three hundred and eighty-one species of the family Syrphidae are currently known from the Czech Republic (Mazánek unpubl. data). There is no modern monographic treatise on this group concerning our country. Faunistic data on members of this family, very attractive for collectors, are scattered in several hundreds works that are frequently burdened by inadequate identifications, particularly in the genera such as Cheilosia, Orthonevra, Platycheirus, Sphaerophoria, Paragus, Brachyopa, Pipiza, Dasysyrphus, etc. There is yet no recent treatise on the distribution and degree of endangerment for the Czech Republic. The classification and nomenclature of the list presented here was employed in agreement with Holinka & Mazánek (1997). The larvae of this family show a considerable diversity of their appearance, environment as well as way of nutrition. They are mycophagous, phytophagous, predacious, saprophagous or saproxylophagous. A number of them belong to most important regulators of populations o
