Description
  • Biomass for energy proposes may be one non-food alternative for production on arable land. The direct combustion is the main way of using energy biomass. High nitrogen content usually leads to high NOx emissions. A comparison of N content in biomass of Festuca arundinacea Schr., Bromus marginatus Ness ex Steud. and Bromus inermis Leyss. was performed to evaluate their suitability as a potential renewable energy source. The experiment was established in Prague in 2002. The N content in the biomass during vegetation was studied at 14 days intervals from mid May to the end of October. Nitrogen content was significantly affected by time of sampling (P < 0.000). The average N content in observed species biomass ranged from 8.2 g.kg-1 in B. marginatus to 10.4 g.kg-1 in F. arundinacea biomass. B. marginatus was revealed as a better quality energy crop for direct combustion than F. arundinacea and B. inermis due to more favourable nitrogen content.
